New Transport Minister

Whilst pleased to see the back of the Labour Government the loss of Lord Adonis as Transport minister is regrettable. Too often the transport portfolio has been filled by politicians slipping down the greasy pole who have shown no real interest in the job. Sadly, the post holders changed frequently, so no coherent transport policy was followed through, except that of the civil servants in the department who are road mad and anti rail and bus.

The new incumbent, Philip Hammond, is the former shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury. So, it could be a double whammy, a post holder with Treasury attitudes (cut or delay expenditure) and no experience of transport issues.

It will be interesting to see which rail schemes get the chop in the next few weeks.

It is a pity Lord Adonis could not be encouraged to change sides.
