I have enough on trying to keep my garden tidy, never mind taking on an allotment. Congratulations to Rusthall Parish Council for calling a meeting of allotment holders to discuss how they might respond to the parish council taking over management of the allotments from the borough council. Press reports indicate that by a small majority the holders were receptive to the proposal but needed more detail.
One issue will be cost: is it cheaper for the allotments to be managed by the parish council, the same, or more expensive? Set against financial issues there is the question of response times to problems and taking appropriate action. Is the parish council better placed to provide a superior service to that provided by the borough council?
One would hope so and that should the parish council take over it will run a best kept allotment competition. The council could support the resurrection of the horticultural society to encourage residents who do not have allotments.
Home grown produce tastes better than anything you buy. By encouraging residents to 'grow their own' the parish council will be supporting the healthy living agenda.
The parish council could be even more daring and support the formation of a food co-operative.
